July 30: True Fidelity

The Saint Head of John the Baptist
Volga River Region, 19th cent.

Saturday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Mt 14:1-12

The king was grieved, yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he commanded it to be given; he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who brought it to her mother (NRSV, Mt 14:9-11)

Father, may we always be faithful to the Word revealed to every human being at the depth of their being and to the divine life offered to all in the Holy Spirit. John was true to his commitment to serve you, Father, a commitment made even from the womb. You help us in every instance, Father, to follow his example.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
